脳神経外科の一分野として機能的脳神経外科という領域があります。脳神経外科で扱う多くの病気、たとえば、脳動脈瘤、脳内血腫、脳腫瘍などは出血の原因となったり脳を圧迫したりしますので手術で処置するわけです。しかしこれらはよく考えてみると、脳神経の外科といいながら、脳の神経細胞や神経線維を直接接手術している訳ではありません。機能的脳神経外科というのは神経細胞、神経線維、脊髄、末梢神経などの神経組織に対して直接手術早作を行い、患者さんの困っておられる症状を緩和しようというものです。

Functional
neurosurgery is a subspeciality of neurosurgery (brain
surgery) in which surgical intervention is directed diectly
to the nerve cells and/or the nerve fibers. Most
neurosugical procedures merely deal with the structures
ajacent to the brain or in the brain, but they do not
usually operate on the brain itself. The aim of functional
neurosurgery is to improve the patients' condition through
operations to the actual nervous tissue.
